NON-EXPLOSIVE ROCK BREAKING
DRILLING AND BLASTING
When you are doing demolition or excavation work for a project, the method that you use to clear the site should be tailored to the worksite and the surrounding area. If you are working in a built up, residential, heritage or sensitive area, the traditional blasting method of demolition isn’t the best one to use as it is loud, messy and destructive to surrounding areas which can cause irreparable damage to the landscape and the residents surrounding the worksite.
As an alternative to blasting, many different types of non-explosive rock breaking have been developed, the most popular of which is chemical rock breaking. Chemical rock breaking uses a specially made slurry or mortar that is inserted into the rock via either an existing crack or fault line or a pre-drilled hole. When inserted, this chemical reaction is triggered in the mortar causing it to expand, forcing the rock apart and breaking it.
The mortar and slurry we use in our chemical rock breaking projects are environmentally friendly and breaks apart stubborn rocks quietly, over a period of a few hours. Depending on the type of rock that needs to be removed the time it takes to crack apart varies, for manmade rock such as concrete it can take as little as 3 hours, but for hardened and stubborn natural rock it can take up to 30 hours to break apart fully.
